Make sure you pick the BEST composition for your still life. The items should be LARGE and fill up the space in the picture plane. Using the view finder can help you find the best composition.
Which composition is better?
Next, you will practice drawing out your compositions in your sketchbook. Do this small, these are called Thumbnail sketches.
Once you have practice your thumbnails in your sketchbook, begin drawing the contours (outlines) of your still life on your 8x9 paper. (Draw lightly in case you need to erase mistakes.) Continue to use the view finder and continue to look at your still life to get accurate proportions.
Lightly draw out the contour lines on the 8x9 paper. Focus on good proportion and making your shapes as accurate as possible:
