Today we will begin creating our materials that will be used in the Texture Altered Book page. We will create intense, wet watercolors (in analogous color schemes) and then add salt, rubbing alcohol, and plastic wrap to get textural effects. We will then create texture rubbings by going on a scavenger hunt around the classroom to find lots of cool textures. Next, we created a complementary color wash on our altered book 2- page spread that will become the background. Tomorrow we will put it all together!

Students are creating a 2-page spread featuring a text poem. In the background students choose either geometric or organic shapes to add with prismacolor pencils. They also are including a title and definition for the page.
Student Samples:Step 1: You will create a small 2 point perspective drawing on colored paper that will be the focal point in your Space Altered book page. Students will create a 2 point perspective design on a small piece of colored paper. They will need 5-10 boxes, 3 overlapping areas, and 3 doors, holes, piercings, etc. Step 2: Adding shading with graphite or colored pencil. Step 3: Students will then create a background on their altered book that creates the optical illusion of moving space. Step 4: Trim some of the negative space away from your 2 point perspective drawing. Then collage your small 2 point perspective design onto the background along with what you trimmed and other collaged papers that match with their chosen color scheme. Step 5: Add the title and the definition.
Today are working on creating drawings in 2 point perspective. These are great for doing things like cool, science fiction landscapes! These will be a part of our SPACE page on our altered books.
Students will work on a rough draft using two point perspective. They will need to have at least 7 boxes with at least 2 spots of overlapping. Once they draw their boxes, they will add, windows, doors, niches, etc. They may also embellish the boxes with pipes, ladders, winding sidewalks, etc.
Students are going to focus on the element of FORM, so we will create a 2-page spread featuring a pop up. In the background students will add collaged papers to fill the negative space. They also included will have a title and definition for the page.
For this assignment you need to do the following: 1. Create a "pop up" element. 2. Add collaged papers to fill the space that help to unify your pop up colored paper. 3. Add more designs with oil pastels. 4. Title: FORM 5. Definition: An object with three dimensions; height, width, and depth.
How to create a Pop UP for your altered book:
After you create the pop up, glue into the book and add collaged shapes to fill the space. Then add oil pastel designs, title, and definition:
Students will create a 2-page spread featuring an "ombre" design in the background out of various hues of tissue paper. They also will include a title and definition for the page in an interesting way.
For the color altered book you will have to include: 1. A tissue paper ombre using analogous or monochromatic colors schemes.
REQUIREMENTS FOR VALUE ALTERED BOOK:
1. Include your photo with shading through the middle. 2. Use black, white, and/or grey paper to add collage of some sort in a design of your choosing. 3. Include the title: VALUE 4. Include the definition for value: refers to the lightness or darkness of an area or object. (you may decorate the rest in any way you choose, but be sure to focus on VALUES throughout!)
Values can be used also with pen and ink techniques as seen below:
The students are working on their Altered book VALUE 2 page spread. Today they will pick a portrait from a magazine and rip out the center section. This section they will replace with a value drawing. Students will be using a range of shading pencils from ebony, 4B, and #2 to get very dark and very light value ranges. Students will then glue the magazine portrait into their altered book and decorate the altered book with black and white values for the rest of the 2 page spread. Students must also include the title: Value and its definition: lightness and darkness in a work of art. See the sample below for more ideas.
WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW FOR DIRECTIONS ON THE FIRST STEP OF THE VALUE ALTERED BOOK:
Our next assignment will deal with values and shading a form to make it look three dimensional. So, today we will begin practicing shading forms with pencil and how to get gradual changes from dark to light. Below is a guide for how to shade, a shading in progress, and a completed shading sheet.
This video is from last year, but it walks you through how to shade the practice handout. If you are out sick/quarantining, you may print the handout above and follow along with the video.
