Sketchbook assignments

Sketchbooks will be due each thursday. These will be visual journal profiles, or visual journal Art 21 responses.

ART 21 Videos

Visual Journal Project Profiles:

For some of your sketchbook assignments this year, you will create a visual journal project profile to accompany the current artwork you are creating, or a future artwork you are planning.

These will be a 2-Page Spread.  Be sure to include the following:
  • Thumbnail sketch or plan of your proposed composition
  • Notes to yourself about media you will choose, questions you have, ideas on what you need to do.
  • Layers of media/ design using some of the techniques below.

ART 21 Assignments:

For some of your sketchbook assignments this semester, watch a short video from the Art 21 website and create VISUAL JOURNAL  in response to the work of your selected artist.

You can search through the videos or search by artist name. You do not have to watch an entire Art 21 episode (hour long). Look for video segments that are around 10 minutes long.

This should be 1 side of a 2-page spread in your visual journal and will include the following:
  • Drawings or collaged images of that artist's work.
  • A short written response of what you learned/ felt while studying that artist's work.  Include how what you learned can impact your own work.
  • Layers of media/ design using some of the techniques below.

Below are ways students have used visual journals to document process for their ongoing projects.  These become works of art as you work through them.  Also, the best ones include multiple layers as well as notes, sketches, and ways to explore different media/backgrounds ideas.
Below are sample of how other students have used the visual journaling technique to research ART 21 artists.  Some of the best ones include mixed media layers, sketches, glued in images, research, and their own responses to the artist:
