CALLS FOR ART

Christmas in Marietta Design ChallengeThe Christmas in Marietta Design Challenge is presented in partnership with the Marietta Visitors Bureau. Submissions are open now, and will be accepted through October 25. The Marietta Visitors Bureau and Marietta Arts Council are seeking artists to design an image for this year’s Christmas in Marietta Design Challenge. The top five selected designs will be put in the running to be voted on by the community to decide the winner, and will be used on t-shirts and other merchandise for sale at the Marietta Welcome Center during the holiday season as a fundraiser for both the Marietta Welcome Center and the Marietta Arts Council. The design should be mindful of traditions in Marietta for the holidays. Please read below for all submission requirements.

 Official Rules
The purpose of the contest is to design an image to be used for merchandise in celebration of the holidays in Marietta. The logo may be used in all media – including online, print, on merchandise, and other visual collateral. Following are the official contest rules:
  • All professional and amateur artists are invited to enter the competition.
  • Artists are not required to live in the state of Georgia.
  • Individuals or teams may submit no more than two entries (a separate Entry Form must accompany each submission).
  • All submitted work must be the original work of the entrant(s) and must not include, be based on, or derived from any pre-existing or third-party designs, trademarks, or copyrighted images.
  • All entries will become the property of the Marietta Visitors Bureau. By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees that any and all intellectual property rights in the logo design are deemed assigned to the board of directors of the Marietta Visitors Bureau.
  • Except where prohibited by law, an entry submission into this contest constitutes permission to use winner's name, likeness, and information provided on the entry form for publicity purposes, without further permission or compensation.
  • The Marietta Visitors Bureau reserves the right to modify the winning logo to better fit the needs of the design challenge.
  • The decisions of the Selection Committee will be final.
  • The selected winner MUST submit a scalable vector version of the winning design so that it is adaptable to electronic and print media, to reproduction on small and large surfaces, and to use in color or in grayscale.
  • Please note: artwork featuring sexually explicit or violent imagery will not be accepted.
How to Enter
To enter the Christmas in Marietta Design Challenge, eligible participants must:
  • Complete the Official Entry Form below.
  • Create a logo design in .jpeg, .psd or PDF formats (if you are chosen as a winner, you MUST be able to provide a high resolution vector file (e.g., in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or InDesign).

ENTRY FORM

Selection Criteria
A Selection Committee comprised of members of the Marietta Visitors Bureau and the Marietta Arts Council will evaluate all entries based on the following criteria (though other criteria may be considered):
  • Relevance – Does the entry align with the brand and identity of life in Marietta?
  • Originality – Does the composition exhibit original design, creativity, and imagination?
  • Aesthetic Quality – Does the submission command attention? Does it display visual balance and color coordination? Do all the elements work together to create a unified and appealing design?
The selection committee will select up to five entries to be a part of the design challenge, which will be hosted on the Visit Marietta GA social media platforms. The winning design will receive a $250 award, social media mentions, and their signature included on the t-shirt design. The Selection Committee reserves the right not to select a winner, if in its sole discretion, no suitable entries are received.

My name is Joshua McGowan and on behalf of the Piedmont College Art Department, I am excited to invite your students to participate in our High School Mixed Media Workshop. This is a free hands-on event open to high school students.  Please read this email carefully as it contains a lot of information, including workshop descriptions and how to sign up for the workshops.
Save the Date: Saturday, November 9, 2019
The schedule for the day is as follows:
9-9:45: Sign-in/Orientation (Smith Williams Art Building)
10-10:50 First workshops (Smith Williams Art Building)
11-11:50 Second workshops (Smith Williams Art Building)
12-1: Lunch (Student Commons)
1-2: Gallery Show Reception and Awards (Smith Williams Art Building)

The following workshops will be hosted by Piedmont College:

Professor Tyler Mann: Introduction to Adobe Illustrator
In this workshop, students will learn the foundational functions and implications of Adobe Illustrator. This workshop is highly recommended to any students interested in graphic design or who are interested in utilizing digital media in their artistic practice.

Professor Drema Montgomery: Painting with Acrylics on Plaster Forms
In this workshop, students will use acrylic paint on plaster faces derived from molds. Students will explore painting basics, acrylic mediums, and glazing techniques, as well as approaches to painting on alternative surfaces.

Professor Rebecca Brantley: Make Your Own Aqueous Media
In this workshop, students will make their own tempera and watercolor pigment experimenting with the basic processes used in aqueous media.

Professor Brian Hitselberger: Watercolor in Print
In this workshop, students will explore the possibilities of combining direct painting with the printed mark. Participants will create a small suite of works on paper using watercolor and various print techniques (stencil, trace monotype) to create unique mixed-media pieces.

Chance Hunter: Raku Firing
In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to fire their own pottery using a traditional Japanese method known as Raku. To register for this workshop students must bring one or two pieces of work that have already been bisque fired.

As of now, we are actively signing up students for workshops.  Space is limited so sign up right away. To register students please email me their names with four workshops they are interested in participating in, listed in order from most to least interested. We will do our absolute best to place students in the workshops they are most interested in, however, space is first come first serve. Please list student names with workshops as follows:
Example:
John Doe
  1. Raku Firing
  2. Watercolor in Print
  3. Make Your Own Aqueous Media
      4. Painting with Acrylics on Plaster Forms

Finally, the Piedmont College Art Department will be hanging a pin-up art show on the day of the workshops in our gallery space! Students are welcome and encouraged to bring one piece of either 2-D or 3-D mixed media artwork for the show. These pieces will be displayed in our Smith Williams Art Gallery located within the same facility where the workshops will take place. We do have a few specific requirements for artwork being brought to the show.
Please ensure that all 2-D artwork:
1. will fit into a 24-inch x 24-inch wall space.
2. can easily be pinned to the wall using simple pins.
Piedmont College will not hang any artwork that requires the use of anything besides simple pins.
Please ensure that all 3-D artwork:
1.  will fit into a 12-inch x 12-inch space. Know that spacing for 3-D work is extremely limited.
2.  The artwork has a solid base and is not at risk of falling over.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to continuing the conversation about this wonderful opportunity and seeing your students here at Piedmont College.

Respectfully yours,
Joshua McGowan
