Continuous Line Contour---Extension!

For the second best continuous line contour drawing you have some options.

Option #1: Scribble!!

Adding MANY more continuous line overlapping areas to add values and movement.  For some examples of this style, check out these artworks by the artist, Vince Low.  He has created artwork that some people call: Scribble Portraits.

Option #2:  Background Options

Carefully trace over your continuous line with sharpie just like the first portrait, or use black ink and inking nibs, but now add something in the background to make the white and black portrait stand out.  Below are examples of students who have used newspaper in the background.  But you could use any of the example backgrounds below:

Newspaper/ Watercolor Wash:
Collage newspaper with watercolor wash overtop:

White Tissue paper:
Collage all over background and then create a watercolor wash overtop to reveal the texture.

Magazine Collage Options:
Focus on Words or Text:  Fill the background will various colors of text from magazines.  Be sure to unify it by the way you lay them out or the size of the words/letters you use.

Create Pattern:
Use the magazines to create some sort of pattern.  This can add movement to your background.  (Try to think of similar colors within your pattern to unify the piece.
Picture
Monochromatic or Ombre magazine background:
Use the same color throughout your background OR go from one value of that color to another.

Magazine Collage + Gesso + Watercolor = unified magic!
Take your magazine collage a step further by putting a layer of Gesso overtop.  This will be translucent and have enough of a tooth that you can do a watercolor wash overtop to unify your color scheme.
Picture
Paper Quilling:
Create a 3D textured effect with design or pattern using colored paper strips and paper quilling techniques in the background.

Coffee Filter + Magic Marker + water= Bleeding magic!!
This is awesome, you should totally try it!
Tissue Paper Patterns:
Cut tissue paper into similar shapes to create background patterns.  This works best if you stick with a similar color scheme throughout.
Picture
Picture
Recycled Plastic Bags:
Scrounge up some plastic bags in various colors for a beautiful textured background.
Map Collage:
Use maps to create a collage in the background.

Do you have another technique you'd like to try out!?  Discuss it with Mrs. Denison to see if it can be the option you go with!

Option #3: Blind contour--complete change!!
