The Assignment: take a photograph in a unique and interesting composition so close up that looks abstract. Then, create a painting from that photograph.

Today we are going to take a look at one of my favorite Art 21 artists, Ellen Gallagher.
Ellen Gallagher s an American artist. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and is held in the permanent collections of many major museums. Her media include painting, works on paper, printmaking, film and video. Some of her pieces refer to issues of race, and may combine formality with racial stereotypes and depict "ordering principles" society imposes.

Use ink/ ink wash techniques for your background. Then create your subject matter with charcoal and/or ink.

For inspiration, you will visit the Nikon Small World Gallery. This is a website for Macro photographers who create amazing images of a microscopic world. Using this website choose one or two photos to manipulate into a new composition drawing it out on watercolor paper. Then use at least 5 various watercolor techniques to add to your painting composition.

The next assignment will need to include at least 5 different watercolor techniques. You will get to choose from a list of 12 various techniques. Watch the videos below and then practice the 12 different techniques to see what they all do. Then, once you pick the image you want to use, you will be able to see which techniques are the best ones to go with your image.
